Status report

2009-09-14, 5:22 pm by "bob"

First off, I want to thank everyone for your overwhelming support since I announced "bob's game" on 080808. It's been an adventure for me these past six years- it hasn't been easy, and I hope to be able to tell the story at the end of this.

I want to say something about the 090909 date, because I can see it has caused some problems on the forum, which are distracting me from finishing up Demo 2 bugfixing. When GLCA contacted me for an interview at E3, I wanted to make it, because I wanted a way to thank the "bob's game" Forum. When it turned out I couldn't get a flight in time, I said I would provide an important update that day. This was the 090909 release date of "bob's game".

I wanted to get this game out on a platform where the most people could enjoy it. Given the popularity of the iPhone/iPod Touch, along with the App Store and freely available SDK, I decided it was the first platform I wanted to port to. Initial progress was quick, but quickly slowed. I spent several months struggling with the platform, including learning a new language and working with completely new tools on an OS I wasn't familiar with. Getting up and running was easy, but development was difficult and very slow. I made progress, but after several months I was frustrated and lagging behind.
I will continue to work on the iPhone port, but there was no way I was going to make it in time- and worst of all I wasn't happy with the controls. I didn't want that to be the first impression of the world for "bob's game"- so I switched target platforms.

One month ago, I began porting "bob's game" to the PC. My progress has been tremendous, but with time running out for testing for the full release, I focused on a new demo. I worked all night for days on end with little-to-no sleep to deliver this demo. Unfortunately, I missed the release date by a day to get it to a small group of testers. Then I encountered other initial issues due to OpenGL incompatibilities - I only have one machine to test on. I'm sorry for not communicating what was going on.
While it is true that I am an evil villain, laughing maniacally at all of you pathetic fools, there are also reasons for the delays- mainly I am sitting in a chair with checklists strewn about the room, frantically trying to manage a hundred things at once.

I know many of you are anxious for a release on the DS. I'm committed to getting the Nitro SDK through the proper channels. If it happens, it will happen the right way. If not, I may release a homebrew version- but again I am unhappy with the incompatibilities this brings. I've worked on this project for a large chunk of my life, and I won't release it in a state I am unhappy with.

I'm constantly amazed by the creativity of this forum and the many projects you've been working on. You guys may not realize it, but you're the ones keeping me motivated and keeping development (somewhat) on schedule. Keep up the good work!

I am moving forward with all plans, and there are many more surprises on the way. You guys don't even know.. this party hasn't even gotten started yet.
I'm going to go back to development now, so play nice- and

DONT STOP THE PARTY!!!!
